Since 2001 we have been ordering trees and shrubs for landscaping projects on a custom basis. We design a landscape, specify the plants, and order from our favorite wholesaler (in fact one of the largest in America and certainly the largest in the Northeast) for delivery and immediate planting at our client’s site.
When they deliver to our yard in beautiful
Danby Four Corners the material never stays for long. It is often taken to a job and planted on the same day - or on the day after - we receive it.
Therefore unlike traditional nurseries we don’t stock trees and shrubs that need expensive care in a nursery:
- We don’t have the expense of carrying a large inventory
- We don’t have overstocks to be marked down or destroyed
- We don’t fight plant diseases and pests in the nursery
- We don’t have to employ a large nursery staff
- We don’t have expensive overhead. Period
And this translates into lower prices for you!
Plus we always deliver the freshest plants possible in the best condition possible at the lowest prices possible.
Why Conventional Nurseries Cost More
Up until now when you are ready for trees and shrubs you either rely on your garden designer or landscape contractor to pick out and plant stock for you, or you go to a conventional nursery to select from their large array of interesting merchandise. At that nursery you can select the exact plant(s) from a display of many of the same ones, or if you have a special request they happily will get what you want for you.
 Trouble is that you will most often pay full retail for your trees and shrubs; especially in the months when demand is high. Sure, there will be early or late season sales and clearances but these usually occur when the plant material is either last year’s stock or what’s left after being picked over all season. Or the sale is on when the conventional nursery is looking to reduce the stock that will need heeling in for over-wintering.
Simply, the conventional nursery has to charge much more than their wholesale for their plants as these nurseries have a giant overhead that needs to be covered by their pricing.
It costs a fortune to stock and run a conventional nursery. There is the cost of big inventory and staff; the cost of maintaining the appearance of the plants and the grounds; the cost of fighting plant pests and diseases; the cost of irrigation; the cost of marking down or even destroying unsold merchandise – and more. It’s tough. Its expensive. And you have to pay for it.
